These Truths

Provide an overview of our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution in the context of the early history of our United States. It is always important, and even more so during the 250th birthday of our nation, that each of us pause, read, and reflect on these remarkable documents, remind ourselves of These Truths, and dedicate ourselves to the "unfinished work" of We the People that “government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from the earth."

Beyond Treaties

John Halliday

Explore Native resilience through the personal journey of John Halliday (Coyote), a Muckleshoot artist, speaker, and former tribal leader. After surviving a near-death experience and losing much of his sight, Halliday turned to traditional Native values of endurance and adaptation to remake his life through art, music, and storytelling.

Blending drumming, flute music, painting, and lived history, he shares how Native communities have survived beyond the signing of treaties. Audiences will gain a deeper understanding of Indigenous history, strength, and creativity today.

Voices of Valor

Voices of Valor

Voices of Valor is a celebration of historical figures during the Early American period who contributed to the foundation of the United States. Most of these stories are people we’ve never heard of—and what better time than now, as our nation turns 250, to tell them?

When we address inclusive histories that reflect the diversity of the early American period, from Indigenous relations with colonists of the 18th century to the ideals of a new nation of the 19th century, we add to the narrative we already know and enrich it. We learn more about a broader context and begin to understand connections we hadn’t considered before.

Courtney Taylor is an independent historian and elementary school teacher. Her previous work includes presenting immersive, research-based historical programs for the Steilacoom and Clover Park School Districts, the Steilacoom Historical Museum Association, and the Spirit of ’76 Living History Association. She is an alumna of the George Washington Teacher Institute at Mount Vernon, Virginia, where her studies focused on women’s roles in the eighteenth century. Her scholarly interests include material culture, historical foodways, and fiber arts, which inform both her research and interpretive practice.
